Psychology

Psychology - recognizing, researching, intervening

Psychology is the science of human experience, behavior and thought. It investigates how we perceive, feel, learn, make decisions and interact with others - and combines biological, cognitive and social perspectives.

At the University of Lübeck, students can expect a research-oriented psychology degree course with a strong scientific focus, which is characterized by close links to medicine, neuroscience and technology as well as sound clinical-psychological content and an application-oriented perspective on mental health.

In the Bachelor's degree course in Psychology (B.Sc.), students acquire sound knowledge in the basic psychological subjects as well as in empirical methodology, diagnostics and statistics. In addition to the classic content of general, developmental and social psychology, there is a particular focus on biopsychology, cognition and mental health.

Building on this, the University of Lübeck offers two specialized Master's degree courses (M.Sc.): The Master's degree course in Psychology - Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy (KliPPs) prepares students for licensure and combines in-depth scientific knowledge with practical training. The second Master's degree course in Psychology - Cognitive Systems is aimed at students interested in research and focuses on cognitive neuroscience, perception and human-machine interaction.

Both programs are closely linked to current research projects and enable individual profile development - ideal for anyone who wants to study psychology with scientific depth and an interdisciplinary perspective.

Career prospects

Psychology is an excellent choice for a degree and career for many reasons. A degree in psychology opens doors to a variety of careers and leads to in-demand jobs. It also offers the opportunity to learn more about yourself and positively influence the lives of others. Trained psychologists have very good career opportunities and below-average unemployment due to an established market with diverse fields of activity. The psychology degree at the University of Lübeck prepares students in particular for clinical psychology and psychotherapy (approx. 55%), followed by business (approx. 20%), counseling (10%) and research and teaching (10%). In Lübeck, as in most German universities, training takes the form of a Bachelor's degree course with a consecutive Master's degree. Bachelor's graduates can also work as psychological assistants in clinics, research, business or the media without a Master's degree. The advanced Master's courses open up the possibility of specialized training with a subsequent competitive advantage for corresponding positions.

Frequently asked questions

Psychology is interesting! Is there anything more interesting than the amazing (and sometimes confusing) way we humans think, feel and act? At the heart of psychology studies are the questions and answers to some of the deepest questions in the process. The study of psychology contributes to a better understanding of others, and often ourselves, on a scientific basis.

The Bachelor's curriculum has a modular structure: In addition to the basic application and methodological subjects of psychology, you can design your personal study profile with our wide range of electives. Electives support the focus of your studies and combine the (research) interests of lecturers and students.

  • Interest in psychological topics and human experience and behavior as a whole
  • Enjoy methodology and are not afraid of statistics and measured values
  • Communicative skills
  • Curiosity about the human psyche

In addition to the Psychology degree course, the University of Lübeck also offers another degree course with psychology content without admission restrictions. The Media Informatics course focuses on human-technology interaction and the design of digital systems. The interdisciplinary course integrates content from computer science, design and psychology and is dedicated to the design of digital technologies for people.

The focus of the -> Media Informatics degree course is therefore on people as users and designers of technical systems. How must systems - such as apps or websites - be designed so that they can be operated effectively and efficiently by the user and are perceived as satisfactory? As part of the degree program, psychology enables a deeper understanding of the effect of technology on different users, which in turn enables the optimal design of systems. This degree program is right for you if you are interested in designing technology for people, if you have an affinity for mathematical-logical thinking and if you find it appealing to learn programming.
